home office

With more and more of us working or studying from home, having the right office set-up is crucial to create a productive, efficient and comfortable environment. But, when it comes to kitting out your home office, what sort of office supplies should feature?

Desk

Furniture is the biggest and, arguably, most important component of a home office, so choosing the right office furniture is key. A home office desk is essential, whether for writing at or for working in front of a computer. Choose a desk that suits your needs in terms of what your office will be used for, and how much space you've got. Ideally, go for the biggest desk you can fit into a room, as, inevitably, you'll soon fill it with files, stationery and other home office supplies, such as a printer. Think about desk design, materials and colour, too, and how it will blend in with the rest of the space.

Seating

A comfortable, ergonomic chair with good back support is a crucial investment for any home office, so don't skimp on this, especially if you'll be spending lots of time in your home office. As well as a desk chair, you might need additional seating in a corner away from the desk, for quiet reading, for instance, or if you have visitors. A small table may also be useful. Again, take into account colour, design and material considerations to suit the style of the room.

Ergonomic accessories

Sitting comfortably at a desk is much more than just having the right chair. Your whole body should be supported from your feet to your hands and wrists. Adding ergonomic equipment to your office, such as a footrest and a mouse mat with a wrist rest can provide the support your body needs as you work. It's also important to avoid neck and eye strain when working at a computer, so the monitor should be at the right height. There are various types of laptop stands and risers available that can bring your screen to the most ergonomic level.

Mobile furniture

If you're seeking a flexible office set-up, where you need to move furniture around, look at sourcing items that have wheels on the bottom. Moveable desks, filing, trolleys and seating all allow you to alter the layout of the room to meet your needs.

Where you might need to section a part of the room off, such as if more than one person works in it, or to define a particular area, adding a screen to your space works effectively.

Storage

A tidy office will keep your space organised, so you can easily find what you're looking for and aren't tripping over items on the floor. Plus, if you have work associates visiting, an orderly space will create a positive impression. Storage is the answer to achieving a neat and uncluttered working area, so think about how much storage you'll need and what for. A simple bookshelf or bookcase may suffice, but cabinets, drawers and cupboards may also come in handy for wider storage needs. If you work from a small room, look for a cabinet that can easily fit under your work desk, so it's not taking up much space.

Plus, if you need to file items away or archive them, boxes and crates can prove useful.

Lighting

Lighting is often overlooked when it comes to setting up an office at home, yet having the right type and level of lighting is crucial for creating a comfortable working environment. Think about the different areas of the office you'll sit at most, and the lighting requirements for each area. A desk lamp, for example, is a must-have, while seating areas away from the desk, such as for reading, may benefit from an uplighter.

Filing

When it comes to storing paperwork and other documents or materials, there's a multitude of filing options to choose from. Lever arch files are ideal for storing on bookshelves, while expanding and lateral files are suitable for cabinets and drawers. For individual documents and papers that don't need to be stored away, simple folders or wallets will suffice, whether kept in a pile on your desk or in an in-tray.

Being able to find the right file or folder you need is important, so don't waste time searching. Make use of indexes and dividers as well as tabs and inserts to keep your stored items easy to locate.

Stationery

No home office would be complete without some stationery supplies, so make sure you've got sufficient amounts of pens, pencils, markers and whatever other writing equipment you might need. A handy storage pot to keep on the desk is a good idea, so you're not rummaging around in a drawer looking for supplies.

A notepad or sticky notes should also be kept nearby when you need to jot down important bits of information.

Many home office supplies will also include things like staplers, punches, pins, scissors, glue and other items relevant to your needs.

Paper and print supplies

Depending on how you'll use your home office, you'll probably need various amounts and types of paper supplies. Ruled or blank paper can be used for making notes or writing letters, while printer and copier paper will be needed when the time comes to print. If you need to post any paperwork, make sure you've got a supply of envelopes of different sizes and types handy in the drawer.

Where you need to print items out, invest in a printer that will meet your requirements, including having somewhere suitable to store it. Make sure you've got supplies of ink cartridges - there's nothing more annoying than ink running out in the middle of a print job!

Clocks

When you've got a deadline to stick to, keeping an eye on the time is important - and with a clock placed on the wall or on your desk, this means you'll never lose track of time. A wall or desk clock is a practical addition to any home office, but it should be stylish, too. Choose a design that fits the setting well, whether you opt for a traditional or more informal type.
